When I start to teach French or English as a second language, I tell students that mistakes are normal and encouraged. It is very important to not translate to the native language because languages are a series of patterns. Some words and phrases are unique to the language and sometimes cannot be translated. It is also important to take risks and step out of your "comfort zone," and take the challenge of learning a new language. Also, set simple, realistic goals. Eventually, you may hit a "plateau," or become frustrated that you are not making progress. Go back to goals. Listen to the language at least 15 min a day, especially during "dead time."
