When I am tutoring a student, I ask the student for his/her long term and short term goals. Then together we set up a plan to achieve the goals both short term and long term. Once we get started on their goals, I will strive for at least 90% communication in the target language. Sometimes this is intimidating to the student which is why that I will go at their pace and encourage them every step of the way. I will also use various games and fun activities to encourage participation and break down some of their barriers.
