During my career as an educator, I have continuously challenged myself to find the most effective teaching practices and curriculum components to drive student literacy. I pioneered several teaching practices and curriculum components that proved to be highly effective in improving the ELA department’s performance. I have established performance goals for myself and other staff, as it pertained to the common core standards. I led professional development sessions for other staff members, in order to improve the understanding of common core standards, and shared best practices for student mastery. I created and utilized specific strategies, like weekly assessment tasks and individual student tracking methods, to drive instructional decisions, based on standard mastery and deficiency.

My name is Katharine M. Melendez, I have 4 years of experience teaching Spanish and English. The classes I offer are in the Spanish language. My classes are focused on grammar and conversation skills. Teaching English used to be tedious; however, what I believed has changed. I first started to teach English online 6 years ago. During the 7 years I have been teaching English, most of the students want to learn grammar so that they can have a good grade at school. Not only did the students’ parents think teaching English should be rule-governed, but I myself also held the same belief. Therefore, I often used the students’ native language, which is basically Mandarin Chinese, to explain everything in an explicit way. It was extremely boring for my students to learn with me. The worst part was that some young learners could not understand the rules.
