I love foreign languages. I speak French, Italian, German and Spanish with limited Mandarin, Dutch and Portuguese! I have travelled to many countries. I hope to encourage students to push thru the challenging moments during language learning as sometimes there are a roadblocks along the way.

I love learning languages because they are my communicative connection to interaction with individuals from other societies and cultures. I am fluent in French through my academic studies and Japanese from the seven years that I spent in Japan. Although I had to follow pedagogical guidelines, when teaching French to undergraduates or high school students, I always tailored my lesson plans to fit the unique personality and character of my students. Learning grammar requires attention to detail and is an analytical endeavor but there is always to room to incorporate creative content within the margins. Language is like art; first you learn the form and then you can move into the abstract by applying your own specific signature to the process. It has to be a fun and dynamic engagement.

For me, learning a new language has opened so many doors, and it has allowed me to experience many things I would not have had I not taken the steps to become a confident speaker in a new language. I didn’t speak French, so I went to Québec City and attended university for 4 years; I didn’t speak Spanish, so I went to live in Costa Rica for 4 years. So, I can assure you that, though there will be challenges, the trek is worth the effort, and you will be glad you took the first step.

When I start teaching Italian to a new student, the first thing I do is to tell him/her to forget about English language. We are going to listen, speak, write, read and have conversations in Italian language. Students will learn with me how to use correctly the grammar, spelling, expressions but also the culture, art and history about Italy. They will be able to read articles, novels, watch films and sing correctly Italian lyrics.
